Intro

I think that it has been said before , but totally justified, YOUNG Miniatures, from KOREA, is constantly placed, between the best selling companies in miniature world. And of course there are clear reasons for this. Subject choosing, professional sculpting and high quality of casting, has ranked YOUNG between the top companies of our small world.

After previous release, of the splendid bust, release named “Royal Navy Captain 1806” “Lucky Jack”, we will now review, a later release with the title “Athenian Warlord – 490 B.C. ”

This piece is sculpted by Young B. Song founder and owner of Young Miniatures and the box art painted by Sang Eon Lee.

The Bust (what’s in the box)

This 1/10 scale bust, comes in just 7 pieces . A resin cylindrical peg for mounting the bust on the base, the torso, the head, the helmet, the crest, the crest holder , and the shield .That’s all

All parts come in the standard yellowish resin that the company uses.

As usual the packaging is luxurious and always among my favorites. Big size hard luxury carton box, in black color , in black color with a transparent plastic sleeve over it to protect the color picture of the box art. Inside all the pieces between 2 thick foam sheets, and perfectly protected. Once again I must repeat that this kind of box deserves to be kept for further use definitely!

And also once again, the box art is brilliant paint job

Quality – Detail

When talking for a resin kit, the quality of material and casting plays a major role for the total evaluation .
Regarding YOUNG Miniatures products, I must admit with no exceptions, that the resin and the procedure of the casting gives a result of very high quality, in all kits I have reviewed , or just seen. So I checked this kits parts very carefully again.
All parts were close to perfection, and despite the scale and the relatively big size of the pieces, the resin is casted perfectly, and compact. This means that the buyer will be happy for what he got.

The casting is line free, which is a pleasure. There are few casting blocks and pegs to move , and some excess of thin resin flake in the helmet openings , but these are a piece of cake to remove with no danger at all. On these specific points, some sanding will make the surface perfectly smooth and ready for priming.

The sculpture is very well defined, and it is as intense I prefer it , so that it will help the painting process a lot. Facial characteristics are nicely made , as well as the hair.

The helmet is also very well made , and has some animal decorations on the sides. The crest holder, crest and shield are really well sized and sculpted expertly with the amount of detail that is needed, for such a scale.

The sculpted detail on the shoulder and back protection parts is really nice and will demand careful painting .

Young B. Song’s work in sculpting was always nice and this keeps or improves with every next piece.

Concluding this phase and after doing, the minor cleaning bits, we said before, you are free, to proceed, in priming and painting. The clever cutting, that Young has chosen, allows every part, to be painted separately, for your comfort and then put them all together. There will be, no problem at all, so no worries.

Painting

In regards with the specific period, Ancient Greeks have been recreated in a big variety of colors regarding the clothing . Some research will give you ideas .

The boxart is a nice combination, but you can easily come up with many others.

As a suggestion , this is a bust for all painters I guess, since the high quality, the easiness of assembly , and relatively simple painting scheme will not discourage anyone. The trick will be to show off the nicely sculpted face, and all other details of the thorax and the crest . It depends also on you if you will add the shield or no.

This can definitely be a brilliant piece in your collection and of course, many versions of this kit will participate in competitions around the world.

Conclusion

One more nice historical release from the company of high quality kits .Really close to perfect quality of material and casting, nice surface and skilled sculpting motivate the painter for a nice result .

Young Miniatures is definitely keeping its flag high.

About Costas Rodopoulos (Major_Goose)
FROM: KIKLADHES, GREECE / Ελλάδα

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
