introduction
If you browse discussion forums dedicated to modeling figures, I’m sure you noticed this sculpt of a very unique subject – Palestinian insurgent. Sculpted by a very talented Sergey Traviansky (Menelay), this figure was released under Evolution Miniatures label and named simply as “Extremist” (EM-35015). Perhaps it already sounds lame repeating the same superlatives when it comes to Evolution Miniatures figures, but it really is the truth… the figure looks awesome; the anatomy and the pose are superb, the equipment is well sculpted, the casting flawless and the fit of the parts excellent.
The review
The figure arrived safely packed in a hard cardboard box. The box front features very nicely painted box art picture and credits both the sculptor (Sergey Traviansky) and the painter (Studio “Argo”).
After opening the zip-lock bags and reviewing parts of the figure I was again amazed by the amount of details on the figure and by the perfect molding of parts. The parts are cast in grey resin and are completely clean of all imperfections: there are no air bubbles, no flash or seam lines. Casting plugs are well placed, allowing easy clean up with minimal chance of damaging the detail.
The figure
The insurgent is depicted in a very natural pose, resting his weapon on the chest rig. The figure consists of just 4 parts: full body with the head and the left arm, right arm, the weapon with attached right hand and a simple figure base. The fit of the parts is excellent… if placed correctly the parts fit perfectly. The anatomy of the figure is flawless and the head sculpt is very nice.
The figure is dressed in Adidas 3-stripe training suit, has a traditional keffiyeh (shemagh) Palestinian scarf wrapped around his neck, a beret on its head and Adidas trainer shoes. As for the military equipment, the figure wears famous Soviet Army chest rig usually called “Lifchik” (brassiere). The original name of the rig is “Poyas-A” (belt-A) for the upper part which can hold 6 AK magazines and 4 grenades and “Poyas-B” (belt-B) for the lower optional attachment for 10 VOG-25 grenades. As a side arm, Stechkin APS pistol is secured to the belt in its unique holster. APS is a 9mm Soviet made selective fire machine pistol which can be used in automatic fire mode. In automatic mode, the pistol should be fitted with the wooden shoulder stock to help controlling the recoil; otherwise the weapon quickly becomes uncontrollable. When not in use, the detachable stock can serve as a pistol holster. The Stechkin was envisioned as a sidearm for tank crews, but due to the fact the pistol is rather heavy and bulky, it was gradually phased out of active service and replaced by the AKS-74U compact assault rifle which offers significantly more firepower. As for the main weapon, the figure carries AKM, a modified version of the original AK-47 assault rifle.
Conclusion
This figure is definitely a unique subject and has that special “cool factor”. Again, the casting of the parts is great and the fit of the parts perfect. The anatomy is spot on and the pose is excellent… I particularly like how the figure rests its weapon on the chest rig. The face is very nicely sculpted while the sunglasses, trainer suit and sport shoes add to figure’s charm. Box art painting looks great and definitely shows what a good painter can achieve with this kit.
Whether you want to add a figure to your technical vehicle vignette or just paint an out-of-the-box modern figure in 1/35 scale… look no further, the “Extremist” is the figure for you.
