A scenery company from the Czech Republic, Model Scene produces landscaping materials for model railroad layouts or other dioramas. Their products are handmade so each piece is unique. Models available include trees, ground cover foliage, leaves, wooden fences and precise laser cut details. Model Scene advertises their product range as appropriate for scales:
* 1:32 (Number 1 Gauge) / 1:35
* 1:45 / 1:48 ( O scale)
* 1:87 (H0 scale)
* 1:120 (TT scale)
* 1:160 (N scale)
Spruce are trees of about 35 species of coniferous evergreen trees in the Family Pinaceae, found in the northern temperate and boreal (taiga) regions of the earth. Spruces are large trees, from 20–60 metres (66–200 ft) tall when mature, and can be distinguished by their whorled branches and conical form. The needles, or leaves, of spruce trees are attached singly to the branches in a spiral fashion, each needle on a small peg-like structure called a pulvinus. The needles are shed when 4–10 years old, leaving the branches rough with the retained pulvinus (an easy means of distinguishing them from other similar genera, where the branches are fairly smooth).
Model Scenes spruce are available in several heights. They are made with wood trunks with texture for the bark, and flexible armatures; upon these are a matte olive synthetic material for the foliage. The branches are not as defined as some of the types of spruces I viewed photographs of, the leaves seeming too concentrated. Yet, the result is a convincing tree that does not have the "cookie cutter" appearance of most mass-marketed model trees.
The synthetic foliage does not have a sheen to it. Compared to spruce photographs the foliage appears convincing. In sunlight they leave a convincing shadow. You can expect the same in artificial light.
These vary from 130mm to 160mm (6"). At the height of 150mm, a 6-inch tree scales to:
* 18 feet / 5.4 M in 1:35
* 24 feet / 7.3 M in 1:48 ( O scale)
* 36 feet / 11 M in 1:72
* 43 feet / 13 M in 1:87 (H0 scale)
* 60 feet / 18.5 M for 1:120 (TT scale)
* a stately 80 feet / 25 M in 1:160 (N scale)
To illustrate this size of spruce in comparision to common scales the photographs show the tree with a 1/35 halftrack and crew, a 1/48 motorcycle with riders, a 1/72 Kubelwagen, and an HO (1/87) boxcar scene with horses and figures.
These handmade trees are sold in sets of five.
These are impressive models and will enrich any diorama.
