Model Festival in Będzin, Poland
29-30th May 2010
Modelers’ life in southern Poland is full of joy and time happily shared with other „nuts”. This situation is possible thank to many modeling festivals and competitions which takes place in our region, for example in Bytom (one of the biggest event in Poland), Katowice (capital city of the Silesia province), Żywiec - a beautiful city between heights and mountains of Beskid. There is also not so far to Brno in Czech or Mossonmagyarovar in Hungary to our foreign friends. There are plenty of opportunities to meet people and to integrate having a beer or two “after hours”. One of these opportunities is a festival in Będzin.
Będzin is a small city with an enchanting medieval castle located on the border of two polish historical provinces: Silesia and Zagłębie. For Będzin the history was lucky enough to give the city a great guy: Kazimierz Rauchfleish , a modeller with an extraordinary passion who give his time for showing the youth how can our hobby be interesting and informative Kazimierz is also an organizer and a “good spirit” of this festival. The place of the festival was a Cultural Center in Grodziec (a district of the Będzin city). As an interesting detail I have to add that before WW2 in Grodziec was located a civilian flying school called “Parcina” which has continued its work even during a German occupation teaching young pilots for the Luftwaffe. So as you see Grodziec has a good tradition in aeroplane sports. Some of the memorabilia were displayed during the show.
The festival which I am writing about was a sixth edition of the event. Although this event is well know in Poland and you can meet many highly talented and decorated modelers, this year edition was not lucky. About one week earlier a big part of Poland, with a major part of Silesia, was flooded by the water from every possible river and brook. With a threat of having your home floodwater up to the first floor you do not think about modeling at all. Consequently there were less competitors and visitors than usual who were simply not able to come to Będzin this year having much bigger problems.
Few words about official statistics now. We had 133 participants: 77 seniors, 30 juniors and 30 youngsters. It is the only festival in Poland with a separate category for the youngsters. This is due to the popularization purpose of modeling amongst the youngest. Seniors brought 219 models, juniors 56 and kids also 56. This gives 331 models in total. The numbers are impressive, but a word of explanation: this are not only plastic models but also paper, cardboard or wooden. Because Historicus Forma focuses on figures only this category is shown in the gallery. The organizers has provided many special prizes and competitions: Memorial of Stanislaw Meus, Pot of a Citizen of Grodziec, Pot of Instructors of the Będzin Soil, Pot of the “Parcina” Association, Pot of Marcusa 05.
In front of the Cultural Center we could see few military vehicles: original WW2 Jeep Willys, armoured vehicle OT-64 SKOT, UAZ-469 and one of Honker variants. Everybody could get inside, sit behind the wheel or sometimes even take a ride.
To sum up: my congratulations to the organizers and especially to Kazimierz Rauchfleish for a great event. Despite many adversities of fate the event was still impressive. Many great models were displayed not only in the plastic category but also in the “paper” - some were really amazing. Although the festival in Będzin is still a local event it gathers many well know modelers who come here not for prizes but to meet other people with the same passion. Good job all and thank you for being in Będzin.
