Painting Splinter Pattern

  • move
introduction:

Many modellers are daunted by camouflage painting, hopefully this article will show that there is no black art to this and how easy camouflage painting is if broken down into separate chunks. I am going to concentrate on the Fallschirmjager jump smock, only because I have an ongoing project which includes a dozen or so of these chappies and thought I would kill two birds with one stone.

historical background and research:

The Fallschirmjager, and Luftwaffe field divisions, had their own version of the splinter camouflage - Luftwaffesplittertarnmuster. This was a smaller and more complex version of the Army Heeressplittertarnmuster and is quite noticeable if you spend hours poring over old photos like we all do.

Compare the following photos:

The smock on the left is the Army splinter pattern, the jump smock on the right is the Luftwaffe pattern.

Anyway, the key to replicating any camo pattern is having a good reference source. Something like this is extremely useful, which is from the Schiffer German Paratroops book by Robert Kurtz:

There are plenty of images to be found on the internet, most useful are re-enactor sites or those that cater in supplying their uniforms.

Still daunted by the splinter camouflage, but a really good article that will no doubt improve the end result for me. Thanks for the effort put into the article.
