box
Because I have this review sample in the early stage of production,it arrived without a box.But the figure box will probably be a standard Athens Miniatures white cardboard box with high quality paper jacket sleeve cover with the photo of figure painted by
John Karoysis.
about evzones
Evzone or
Euzone which means well-belted is the term used for the members of Greek Elite Infantry units. They came originally from the mountain districsts of Greece, particularly Epirus. They fought in Greece’s War of Independence, Balkan Wars, World War I and II and gained a reputation for courage and endurance. The regiments were disbanded after World War II but remained as royal guard in Athens. Today it refers to the members of the
Proedriki Froura (Presidential Guard), an elite ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Parliament, Presidential Mansion and Tomb of Unknown Soldier.
The unit is famous around the world for its unique traditional uniform which is designed to be similar to the outfits worn by the Greece’s historic mountain guerillas, the klephts (thieves) and Armatoles(bandits) who resisted the Ottoman occupation and fought hard in the war of independence.
model
The model is 65 mm in scale and made up of 13 white metal parts. It is sculpted in fine details by Greek sculptor
Babis Stathis,an Armorama member aka
aiantas. The figure is well cast and there is no need for a detailed cleanwork but a few vertical seamlines should be cleaned before painting. Brushing with a wirebrush makes all details more apparent and washing with a mild detergent will make the figure ready for priming.
Main part is torso with legs. He wears a
Dulamas, a short cross tied coat. Collar details, buttons, pocket covers and cloth folds are well defined. A leather cardridge belt and strap to attach the bayonet is cast on the figure. Tassel of the garrison cap is sculpted on the left shoulder of the figure. He wears long knitted stockings tied below the knee with tassels and typical Evzone
tsarouhi shoes, nailed clogs with pompons which are supplied as seperate parts in kit.
Other parts are;
- Head : He wears a phareon, garrison cap with a long tassel. Face details like beard, hair and ears are good and face really looks like a Greek infantry of the period. The insignia on the cap is well defined. Long cord of the tassel is casted on the left side of the head.
- Left arm : Posed to hold rifle putting his hand on the top of the barrel.
- Right arm : Posed to put his hand on his waist. Cloth folds are well defined and fits good to the waist.
- Cartridge holders : M1889 Greek made rectangular one piece cartridge holders with covers, similar to German ones .
- Pompons : Some attention is needed to attach these small parts on front of the shoes. Texture of the pompoms is well represented.
- Rifle : Austrian made Mannlicher Schoenauer M1903 semi-automatic rifle used by Greek infantry troops.
- Bayonet : Long type M1914 bayonet
- Gun Powder barrel : A small gun powder barrel is supplied to add realism to the figure base. The place to add the barrel is marked.
- Bag : It is casted with a strap and adds realism to the figure base.
- Figure base : Nice ground texture and rocks. The holes on the base makes the figure assembly easier and a good fit.
painting
Though the figure is supposed to paint as an historical Evzon soldier in the Balkan or World War I and II periods, the posing of the figure and some minor changes can give a chance to paint it as
Today’s Evzon guarding on the Tomb of Unknown Soldier.
One of the review samples of the figure is painted by
Costas Rodopoulos, figure editor of Armorama aka
Major_Goose and can be seen
here.
conclusion
A strong posing figure casted in fine details, ease on clean and assembly and a nice figure base with good accessories.
