Italian Masterclass miniatures has released nice kits time by time , but this one is one of my favorites
Here we will inspect the Napoleonic theme with the title ďImperial Guard Drummer ď MCF- 54015 including a 54mm miniature in white metal .
The kit is sculpted from the well known miniature sculptor Stefano Borin and the box art version of the vigniette is painted by Italian painter Ellio Stella .
Masterclass boxing is safe enough, since the12 (11 for the figure and 1 for the base) kit parts are really well protected in small plastic bags, sandwitched between thick foam sheets, and putted in a hard carton box . Outside a colored sleeve including the box art painting is wrapping the box.
One thing I have noticed again on some Masterclass figures, is that they donít include some sort of a leaflet with the usual brief historical reference, and some pictures (more than the ones on the sleeve ) of the finished Ė painted figure as a guide.
The truth is that if someone browses their site, will find more information on the kit , but also a lot of information is available through the web sites, so no real problem with that.
Theme and Pose
This figure is really impressive. The nice imperial uniform of the Guardís drummer is very attractive, and the two drums laying in fornt of the feet of the drummer complete beautifully the scene .
The figure is really well proportioned, and the face has nice characteristics. The painted box art is really a motive to get and paint this one !
To my happiness, and I believe many others, the figure is a full 65mm and not 54mm so that leads to more comfort while painting .
Quality and Detail
This is a classic Masterclass kit . That means that the white metal quality is really high, and the casting result is also at very good level.
As usual I examined carefully all the parts and in every detail.
The situation is pretty good for the modeler as you wonít need any correcting and filling anywhere on this fine piece of metal.
Itís rather clean and smooth. Few mold lines are so soft that will be eliminated easily with a new blades soft passing. Then perform a pass with some steel wool and some bath in mild detergent and is ready to prime.
Sculpted detail is really crisp and clear. All parts are nicely detailed and show that extra attention have been paid to folds and creases and all other points of interest of the figure. But the drums also are really nicely made, and the imperial eagle is sculpted subtly to make the painters life easier.
Since this is a specific soldier , of a specific Imperial force, I donít think that there are many different options. I would go with the one of the box art , as it looks rather impressive .
So make your research and head on !
Since this is not a very complicate to assemble figure , cannot be considered a difficult kit for painting . But there is some black flesh, cloth, golden lace trimming , and the drums , so it will not be effortless to finish it !
But its worth !
Conclusion Ė Final Verdict
If you like Napoleonic subjects and you donít know , or havenít painted a Masterclass figure so far , this is the ideal one for the first !
The theme is nice, colorful, the detail and sculpting quality is high, and in general definitely will satisfy the modeler .
