Book Review
Modeling WWII Figures

by: Mark R. Smith [ GUNNY ]

This review is of the Osprey publication, “Modeling WWII Figures”, # 9 in the Osprey Modeling Manual Series.
The multitude of variety of Axis and Allies, uniforms, camo schemes, and weaponry used throughout WWII gives the figure modeler an inexhaustible supply of subjects, and accounts for the popularity of WWII figure modeling.

This book, using the step by step technique that has made this series so popular, is an invaluable guide to the subject of WWII figure modeling. Subjects covered in this manual range from the hot sands of the western deserts to the frigid Arctic north, and from the years of Blitzkrieg to the collapse of the Third Reich.

Another beauty put together by Rodrigo Hernandez Cabos, with photographs by Antonio Solar Garcia, Salvador Gomez Mico, and the author himself. As with all of Ospreys publications, photography is top notch, and the supporting text is detailed and very easy to read and understand.

In this book you will find individual figure subjects, vignettes, and Dioramas all explained step by step with photos and text-and I’ve got to tell you, you have got to see these model subjects!

Book Format: Paperback, 8”x10”, 64 pages with 263 color photos

I’ve got to say that even though this book has only 64 pages in all, every page is an adventure and an extremely amazing journey through WWII figure painting. The tips and techniques are super, and the photos of the process are pretty hard to beat.

I strongly recommend this book to ANY modeler, not just the figure painter alone, for the techniques covered here are priceless…very detailed paint scheme charts for each subject, step by step painting technique, and supporting text is fantastic! This book and a little practice will have you turning out some really amazing pieces in no time.

Highly suggest that you buy this one and add it to your library…I don’t think that you will be disappointed.
Many thanks to Osprey Publications.

About Mark R. Smith (Gunny)

I have been building models of all sorts all of my life, concentrating mainly on the coolest one's when I was younger, but now I focus directly on all military subjects, from armor to warships. After years of counting rivets, I put away the calipers, dial indicators, and micrometers and now just ha...
