introduction

Romeo Models, well-known company of historical white metal figures in various scales, started to produce a new series in 1/35 scale representing characters from World War II in scenic bases. Figures are made of white metal and scenic bases are from resin with some metal parts. The first kit of the series RM-WW-01 depicts German war correspondant, Propagandakompanie der Marine, Lieutenant Horst Grund in Sicily 1943.
the kit

The kit comes in a plastic zip lock bag stapled to the company label. Inside the bag , there is a small sheet supplied as a basic painting guide with photos of the painted product from different angles and a control certificate that will be helpful for the replacement of the missing or damaged parts. The parts are tightly wrapped with stretch film for safety.
figure

Figure is sculpted by Stefano D'Antonio and posed sitting on a wooden fence with folded arms. It comes as a single piece cast in white metal. A fast cleanwork by sanding of the slightly visible seamlines on the outer sides of legs and metal brushing will be enough before priming. Facial details, moustache and beard are well defined. His headgear is a Kriegsmarine Schirmmützen - German Navy Senior Officer visor cap. Details like leather chin strap secured with metal KM buttons on both sides of the cap, bullion cap braid, emboridery cockade and metal eagle insignia are well represented. He wears DAK tropical shirt which was issued to all Afrikakorps units also Kriegsmarine. It was a pullover type, with four-button fastening to the slash. It had two pleated patch breast pockets and loops sewn to the shoulder seams to accomodate shoulder straps. An eagle and swastika breast badge was positioned over the right pocket. Cloth folds of the shirt, upfolded sleeves and wrist watch on the right arm are well defined. He has a Tropical short with two, diagonally angled, slash front pockets and a small, horizontal watch pocket situated just below the right front waistband. On the back side, there is a single slash rear pocket. As for the footgear, he wears white socks and shoes.
scene

The scene consists of 4 parts ;
  • Base ; A square base is given inside the kit. Places where the other parts will be glued are well marked on the base. It shows a nice ground texture and some vegetation can be added for a better look.
  • Brick/stone column ; It makes a good fit to the base but needs a cleanwork at the bottom for a good fit.
  • Wooden post ; Vertical part of the fence. It comes as a metal part, wood texture is well defined.
  • Fence board ; Horizontal part of the fence. It shows nice wood texture and will be painted in diagonal white stripes.
    reference

    The following books can be helpful when painting this product ;
  • Osprey Publishing - Elite series 034 - Afrikakorps 1941-43 by Gordon Williamson & Ron Volstad
  • Osprey Publishing - Elite series 060 - U-Boat Crews 1914-45 by Gordon Williamson & Darko Pavlovic
  • Sutton Publishing - German Navy Handbook 1939-1945 by Jak P. Mallmann Showell
    conclusion

    A nice sculpted and high quality cast metal figure and an easy to build, well detailed resin base. This is a very good kit to display a World War II scene.
