In-Box Review
54mm
Grand Master of Hospitaller of St.John

by: Engin Kayral [ GRAYWOLF ]

box

The figure comes in 125 x 85 x 30 mm.standard Pegaso Models Elite Series blue cardboard box. The front cover shows a photo of the figure painted by Daniel Milosevic from 3 different angles front, left side and right side close up.

Inside the box, there is 2 paper sheets including historical info about Hospitaller Knights and painting instructions for this figure. This document is prepared by Marco Guillani and presented in 4 languages; English, Italian, French and German.

Parts are well protected between two slabs of thick gray polyfoam and small parts are secured in a punched plastic bag.

parts

The figure is sculpted by Gianni La Rocca and made up of 10 white metal parts. Casting of all parts is very well detailed, clean and crisp. There is no need for a serious clean up, filling or sanding. I advice you to brush your figure gently with a wire brush and then brush it again with an old toothbrush and mild detergent or soap to make it shine before priming. Remember that brushing figures makes details visible and priming makes paint adhere much better on metal figures.

The main part is torso with legs. He wears a jupon surcoat over his mail hauberk, padded leg protectors and shoes with prick spurs. Cloth folds on surcoat, belt buckles and holes, details on the leg protectors and spur straps on shoes are well defined. There is a receiving hole on the right thigh to attach the sword and another on the left side for the dagger.

  • Head : He wears a helmet with face guard over his mail coif. Chain mail, details of facial mask, trimming and rivets are well defined.

  • Arms : Both arms fit very good to the shoulder holes. Right arm is posed to hold the flags on his shoulder and left arm holds the shield straps. He wears leather gloves over the mail hauberk. Shield strap is cast on left hand to make the assembly easier.

  • Sword in scabbard : He carries a sword with long crossguards and disc pommel on its hilt. It fits well to the hole on left thigh.

  • Dagger in scabbard : He carries a dagger with C-shaped pommel on hilt and short crossguards on right thigh and fits well to the receiving hole.

  • Flags : Two flags are cast together. Folds, rivets attaching flags to the spears and javelin heads are well defined. The cavity at the bottom of big flag makes a very good fit to right shoulder. Please notice the gutter on the right side of this cavity for an incoming explanation. The artist painted the small flag in red background with a white cross representing Hospitaller of Saint John and big flag is painted in white background with a two headed black eagle representing Guerin de Montagu, Grand Master of the Hospitaller of Saint John in Jerusalem.

  • Spears as flagpoles : Two spears are cast together and one is 15 mm longer.

As I made a quick check on this kit, I thought I will have some problems on fixing the spears to the flags because the metal flags seemed quite heavy. But I noticed this 15 mm length fits very good to the gutter on the flag and provides a good balance and bonding.

  • Kite shield : Battle damage is well represented on the front and rear is well detailed with arm attachment, straps, buckles and rivets. The extension on the right side makes an easy and good fit to the figure base.

  • Figure base : It looks very good with shield and a few small rocks. The ground texture, battle damage and straps on the shield are well represented.

    about Guerin de Montagu

Pedro Guerin de Montagu was born in 1168. Also called as Brother Guerin Montaigu or Garin de Montaigu; he was the Master of the Hospital in Jerusalem, Acre, and Cyprus. He was elected 14th Grand Master of the Hospitalers in 1208 and helped the Christians in Little Armenia repel the attacks of the Sultan of Iconium. In 1218, he played a distinguished role in the defense of Damieta. When Frederic II had crowned himself King of Jerusalem and was excommunicated by Gregory IX, he went to Palestine to negotiate between them. Died in 1230.
    conclusion

Top quality casting, ease on clean and assembly, smooth fit, superb detailing, very strong posing, historical and painting reference in 4 languages and pleasure of painting a Grand Master. I think this one deserves to be called as Grand Master.

    Very Highly Recommended

Thanks to Luca Marchetti of Pegaso Models for the review sample.
