Hi all; thx Mario for the article, it helped a lot. I've changed a bit the color scheme proposed in the article (flesh instead of blue/violet to brighten black) as it tended to be blue instead of black, but for the rest I didn't have any issue following the schedule. Here are a few progress pics on a german tanker I'm currently painting; my basecolor is a bit bright but on next time I think I have a good chance to be closer to black.
Hi Stanley. The thing with painting black uniforms is that if you use black as your base colour, you have nothing to go darker with for the shadows. Therefore you need to use a colour that is not black. A friend recommended to add flesh to the black for the base colour. This gives a warm, slightly faded colour which is perfect for the unifmrom material. You can add more flesh for highlights and a light grey for extreme highlights. Pure black of course for the shadows. Below is the Tamiya tank crew I painted using these colours.
i tried to lighten black with black grey for my base coat - but then cant get shadows worth a damn.. do I just need to use pure black on the shadows or do you think I will be better to repaint with flesh to lighten (does that mean I have to strip the figure)?
