On a recent trip to Bath I picked up this 1/16th figure made by Mini Art. First impressions aren't good to be honest, only stuch a few bits together though -

Bronze items - i dont want a uniform Bronze look so i based the bronze parts in this steps:
A - Black
B - Black/Burnt Umber
C - Red (Vallejo)
D - Blue (GW Regal)

NB - stretched sprue used for broken arrows


All Bronze minus the Greaves

Blocking in the Skirt with GW Blood Red, now there is a second part to go over the top (those of you who have seen any pictures of a Hoplite will know what i mean) however there is no-way that it will fit (too small and doesn't fit curvature of the skirt) so i may leave it off - anyone know if there is a problem with this?

Next up i will start layering thin layers of GW Dwarf bronze on to the 3 Bronze sections. Probably by then my new skin colours will have arrived...

Hey Lewis, Same problems with mine but I thought the feet were the worst ever. The second portion of the (skirt) is a nessesary part of the combat equipment. It was made of leather to protect the groin area. I glued them on after I assembled the rest of the lower body and ended up spreding them apart to fit as corectly as I could. They don't lay properly but as I spaced the legs apart it dosn't look to bad. The joining seams that I puttyed showed up after thre first flesh coat went down and I got so disgusted with it I put it on the back burnner and have not p/ u yet. Now seeing yours, I'm tempted to give it another try. It would have been real nice to have a set of decals for the shield rim, inside and out. I bought both sets and they are the same except for the shield cloth that protects from arrows. They all need tender loving care but I belive they will look decient when completed. Good luck with yours.

@ Bob - cheers for the info on the second skirt - this should be fun is it me or are the instructions wrong for it aswell? yeah i swear one of the toes is missing or something? as for the rim i think i will make a template or something to get white or black triangles. the legs are an absoulte sod, filled them in and all but i think with the flesh tone the rest will even itself out ......hopefully

Hey Lewis, One thing I should have mentioned earlier about the shield. It was made of wood with bronze on the out side. The entire center to the lower rim was cloth coverd therfore, you should make sure your damage shows a bit of cloth on the edges. There is also some speculation that the sword is wrong for the time period the figure depites. If I remember correctly, it should have a slight outer curve.Also according to me research. The helmit plume would be left to right for officers and front to back for standard troops for combat recognision during battle. I'll have to check my referance but it really should not matter unless you want to be 100% accurate. I'm doing mine for the battle of Thermopily, don't know if I spelled that right. Standing with drawn sword with broken spear at his feet. There is a lot of written acounts of the spartans and the battles they fought but not much in real artifacts which make it hard to be sure of. One thing you can be sure of, it will take skill and patince to bring this figure to good measure, but you are well on your way. I am trying to locate one of the French musketers from miniart. Figure they can't mess up the feet as they have boots.

@ Bob - Yes i had notcied that it was wood on the inside only done outside with bronze so far. Will change the plume as soon as i get in from my paper round. I understand what you mean about the sword as it looks very different in the artwork - reminds me of "Sting". I will depict the final figure on a bed of rock , with a touch of grass ( arrows in the ground) na d possibly spattered blood and a spear at his feet.

Got the other skirt on - there is a gap which should hopefull be covered by the shield. Attached the skirts to the torso and applied some blood colours (cant see in the pictures - bottom left)


Sheild decal applied aswell as a white edge - not too much care take as these would have been hand painted and would wear off so bronze shows through in some places. A drybrush of GW Bleached bone applied to the edge for cloth

Sooooo twiddling my thumbs now until the flesh tones arrive - tomorrow hopefully
Decided to add some blood to the sheild - i am gonna ssume this guy is a fairly effective figher to was in the action quite a bit.
Simply splattered a mixture of Tank Brown and Scarlet Red and wiped off


Created the wound in the arm, along with an arrow wound

Current state of play with the head

Spent a good hour or two filling these legs....again


Decided to leave the 1mm gap at the back of greaves as it does look effective - there is supposed to be a gap where they tie up etc

Hey Louis, don't forget to fill the gap between the helmit and crest. By the way, I draged mine out but have so much stuff going on I only re-puttied the legs so far.

Just a quickie,
I decided to try out using acrylic for the flesh tones, a first after gothicgeeks little sbs So for the arms/legs i will use a darker colour as i can see that the flesh is a tad light
w/helmet on

Couldn't really get a decent shot of the face :/ and that brown blob (?) on the nose isnt there in reality

Looks great so far Lewis. I have this kit in my stash, or one of the variants at least. This thread definitely makes me want to build it next. Shame the kit sounds like it needs a lot of work.

It may not be coming through in the pictures but did adding the red and blue before the bronze help at all?

I agree with the flesh being too light, as great as it looks I would even think about darkening the face too. Those guys were out in the sun all day everyday, they probably had some dark tans going on that would make california girls jealous.

One tid bit about the shield, you put the decal over some of the scars and gouges you made, you probably already did this but I would suggest removing those parts of the decal. Also the tip of the decal seems to be lifted by one of the arrow shafts.

All in all he's shaping up to look like a real warrior, I like the idea of the blood stains and the arrow shaft in his shoulder. Looking good.
