Before the base coat of UP yellow, I pre shaded with Rust-Oleum red primer and flat black. This way the Krylon yellow that I already have won't look to bright.

The roof was masked off then a base coat of an old can of a Krylon bright yellow was sprayed on. A close match to the prototype I think

Looks nice with the weathering. There is a caboose similar to this over at the New York State Fair Grounds.

I think that worked well, knocking down the brightness to closer to UP's Armour Yellow.
I love the dusty rust effects down low too.

The darker grime will be refined a little by going back in with some alcohol damp brush. The prototype of this replica is still in service and is covered in graffiti, end to end, all the bottom half. This is next

The scuffing on the steps looks super! The grime on the trucks does too. That caboose looks like it has seen many miles over the Wasatch.

It's static display. As far as I know, there are no cabooses currently in active service with an US railroads.

Progress continues now with the "graffiti" as the prototype looked in 2007 - 2008

Resized (scaled) prints were made for the hand painted names on both sides of the prototype. These prints were cut out as stencils to get the proportions and styles just right. These stencils were held in place with my thumb while I painted in the fills with hobby brand acrylics. The outlines, clouds, shadows and details and touch-ups will be handled later freehand with a fine brush





While studying this print of TLOK, I notice the original UP deco that was covered up except the top was still visible.

Nice job so far on the graffiti.

Now, maybe it's just me, but seeing graffiti on things just makes me angry. To me it's a complete disrespect of other peoples property. I realize that graffiti "artists" don't really care about that, though.

You're not alone in your opinion on "graffiti". Many others dislike this activity as well.

I like this specific subject of realism when replicating prototypes. I wouldn't replicate a clean train. I wouldn't replicate a clean train with graffiti. It's just not interesting to me. I'm interested in weathered and damaged and with graffiti on train subjects

True, it does add realism to the model.

I'm with Fred here KSO, the paint chipping on the step risers is a standout effect. Did you use hairspray to get that?
I've been following your conversion here right through without comment so far because I know precisely Zero about railway rolling stock, but your techniques and attention to detail are awesome as always.

What up, D ! Thanks for checking in.

I used the simple sponge technique. I tore off bits off of a facial make-up sponge and touched it into paint. Then dabbed a little off onto a paper towel, then dabbed it onto the spots on the model that I wanted the worn off look. The paint is Gunze Sangyo, Burnt Iron, 76

I found appropriate decals by Microscale. I just needed to imply the part that is still visible

There are screens welded over the large side windows and end door windows. I found fine screen from a 12" diameter frying thing used for … frying food on the stove, to replicate this.

I measured and cut the parts then spray painted ruddy red primer
