That is gorgeous. I love your painting style. The highlights give it an ultra reality and makes it more a work of art; a painting come to life; than just another diorama. Wow.
And the choice of the red for the Apache versus the yellow on the trooper and scout provides a good contrast.

A Civil War Trooper? Those shell jackets went out before this period.

What period? Don't assume it's the 1880s when in fact it could be the 1860s. The equipment the trooper has points toward an earlier date. Everyone else is non-regulation so their stuff could any time and as late as the 1880s. But the trooper retains issue items that date it firmly to the 1860s.
Besides, he's a senior NCO. Senior "Old" army NCOs have always been notorious for retaining old, out of issue items as a sign of an elite status. (outside of John Ford movies too)

This is already outstanding! You've done a wonderful job of capturing the intensity of this close-quarters combat scene. On top of it all, your painting style is simply beautiful. I'm really enjoying the WIP photos.

Doug,
Your labeling of the last photo is appropriate --"One Last Shot" Just simply amazing-- when is the Cohen art gallery going to open? I'm ready to pay admission!

This is very well executed and the painting superb. I have all four sets ordered and am looking forward to them. As far as the jackets are concerned, the government was not spending much money on the western frontier after the civil war. So the troopers ended up using what was mostly left over clothing mixed with new issue. New weapons were slow to arrive also. Scouts came as they were and not provided with army issue. But a key factor was if you came from a well to do family, you could purchase what dress you desired, and many officers did for the image factor. No matter, I love this dio Doug. Hopefully Masterbox will pursue this time era unlike the civil war set, which can also be used in this time setting.

I'm so inspired that I just bought this set and the Civil War cavalry charge set to do a Civil War cavalry skirmish scene. I think the trooper in this would look just fine in butternut.

This is really fantastic ! I'm planning to combine the cavalry box with the 'last stand'. Doug, can you tell me what colors you used on the uniforms so I can get those. Would be a BIG help !!

Doug that is an amazing piece! Your composition is excellent, you really can feel the tension created by the two figures aiming at each other, and it ties the whole composition together freezing the moment, even with all the movement going on. Wonderful!
