by: Engin Kayral [ GRAYWOLF ]

MrBlack Publications added the 9th handbook to the Figure Modelling series. The new book catches the high standard of the company with the printing quality and content. It is in the same format as the former books - A4 size, matt laminated cover and 52 pages. Despite the page number stays the same, the number of chapters is less than the other books which makes each article more detailed, understandable and satisfying. Besides covering the standard subjects like assemblying, painting in oils and acrylics, articles include extreme subjects like sculpting figures and scene elements, detailing with plastic and wire and scratch building. Step-by-step presentation in numeric sequence and added texts make them easier to follow and more helpful.
inside the book

The book includes four chapters with models from different scales and time periods. The chapters are ;

  • A Comprehensive Painting Guide : Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth builds and paints one of the best mounted figures of Pegaso Models 54-525 Knight of the Holy Sepulchre Order. 114 step by step photos marked in numbers , a well detailed text and 3 photos for the finished figure. He explains how to assembly the horse and the figure, detailing them, how to paint them, painting shield and banner, and also making the groundwork in 18 pages. He shares his color codes too. The article is like a small handbook itself.

  • How to Sculpt a Scratch Built 75mm Vignette for Commercial Casting : A Grey Beard,but Lusty Heart is a perfect article on sculpting the 75 mm commerical kit for Irbis Miniatures . Igor Kordyukov sculpted the scene on Claudius Stepanov’s oil painting - There is No Fool Like an Old Fool. 78 photos in numeric sequence and 4 photos for the final product in 8 pages. He shares material used and his technique on sculpting the figures, furniture and base and how to detail them all.

  • Combining Acrylics and Oils on a Large Scale Bust in a Scenic Setting : Sergey Popovichenko paints Taurus Miniatures 1/9 scale bust The Last Resistance Fighter. First, he describes how to cast plaster base, painting, detailing and weathering it. This is explained very clearly in 16 photos. Then he tells how he painted the bust in step by step 12 photos and a finished scene photo.

  • Get Inspiration from a Greek Master Modeler : Christos Katselos tells about his approach on modelling and shares his thoughts and painting methods to the newcomers. The article includes 8 of his masterpieces with short explanatory texts for each in 11 pages. 5 models and 3 busts are carefully selected as historical, Indian, WW II, sci-fi and fantasy.

    Quality and profitability of this series proved itself both for new and experienced modelers. I am sure this is another one many of us will read in great pleasure and find some good hints to increase our creativity.
